Monday morning recap: Sex
As usual, incredible morning in our worship gathering today. If you missed it, you missed one of the most unique, fun, and powerful mornings I’ve ever been a part of… seriously. Not only did I spend about 5 minutes talking about Solomon and calling him “Saul” (instilling confidence in my Biblical knowledge, huh?), but we hit the section of 1 Corinthians where Paul lays out God’s directives for Christian sexuality. Here was the verdict from Scripture…
God is pro-sex.
There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. See, there are two principles to keep in mind when it comes to Christians and sex and we’re usually awesome at one of them and terrible at the other. Here are the two principles…
- Don’t permit what God forbids.
- Don’t forbid what God permits.
We’re awesome at the first. The Kentucky basketball team is better at 3-point shooting than we are at the second. There is an entire book of the Bible celebrating human sexuality (Song of Solomon). So if you’re a rules-person, here are your rules for Christian sexuality…
- If it’s not a consensual act involving only you and your spouse within the confines of heterosexual monogamy, it’s sin and will emaciate your soul.
- If it is a consensual act involving only you and your spouse within the confines of heterosexual monogamy, there’s freedom… and enjoy the freedom
Some people will have more specific questions after a morning like this and there’s rarely a chance to address questions of such a sensitive nature. Please be aware, the following links contain content designed for mature couples and address issues that many will deem graphic. A few links that might help follow up some of the things from this mornings’ sermon (WARNING: Mature content)…
- Pastor Mark Driscoll answers 31 very specific (and sometimes graphic) sex questions from a Biblical perspective
- A site that will make you blush to spice things up for Christian married couples
- Breaking pornography addiction – pt 1
- Breaking pornography addiction – pt 2
Now, my favorite part of preaching today was combatting THE LIE that Satan wants you to believe about your sexual sin: that you can never be free from your sin or the guilt and shame that has accompanied past sexual sin. The good news of the gospel is that it makes you clean. I can’t say it better than one of my pastor-heroes Matt Chandler so I’ll leave it up to him…

Hey, I just thought you were saying “Sol” … as in short for “Solomon.”
Congrats on getting through a tough sermon and staying faithful to Scripture. You ended with the good news of the gospel as the solution to all our past hurts and sins. Nothing matters more than that. Love you, Josh!
Thanks, Dan. Great day yesterday. Lots of gospel-healing…
So, after yesterday’s sermon, THeo and I have decided that the question, “How’s your prayer life?” takes on a whole new meaning.
@Tasha – awesome. I love it!
Don’t be surprised if there’s a whole new baby boom at The Bridge.
Great sermon and great delivery! Thanks Josh for staying faithful and sharing the things that might not always be comfortable. I’m thankful that our students could hear and know clearly what Bible says about sex! I am so thankful for the way you ended the sermon and for God’s grace to everyone of us…. Well done.
@Tasha- I love that!
