What were the 5 biggest events of 2011?

UPDATE: I should’ve made this clear. We’re looking for the 5 events that most captured people’s attention rather than the most historically significant events.

OK, we’re not letting the cat out of the bag totally yet, but we’re finalizing details for the next sermon series (and are REALLY excited about it).  Here’s where I need your help: we need to decide what the 5 biggest events of 2011 were.  We’ve trimmed our list down to 7, but need to cut 2 more.  Which 2 of the following would you cut if you were crafting the series…

  • The Casey Anthony Acquittal
  • Osama Bin Laden killed
  • Tohoku, Japan Earthquakes and Tsunami
  • Steve Jobs: the passing of a generation’s luminary
  • The Harold Camping prophecy
  • 2 billion people watch the Royal Wedding
  • Congress narrowly avoids government shutdown

Post your responses in the “comments” section: which 2 of the above do you think we should cut for the next sermon series?

  1. I’d say cut casey anthony and congress. don’t seem… big enough.

  2. 4 Biggest Events:

    1) Osama bin Laden killed
    2) Earthquakes and Tsunamis
    3) The Royal Wedding (2 BILLION viewers)
    4) Steve Jobs passes away

    Cuts:

    1) Congress narrowly avoids government shutdown. If they hadnt actually avoided the shut down it would be a very different story, but thankfully, they did.

    2) Either Harold Camping prophecy or Casey Anthony Acquittal.

    jobs and camping

  4. I was going to suggest cutting the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but I see they aren’t 2011 news…

I see Matt cheated by suggesting three. That’s a flag for a flagrant foul.

Cut the royal wedding and Casey Anthony. Camping is a good example of, “This is how we DON’T want to do it.”

    royal wedding and anthony acquittal

  7. I would cut Casey Anthony & Harold Camping, neither changed the world. But,I would add riots and overthrown governments in the middle East Also Known As “Arab Spring.” This has given rise and power to the Muslim Brotherhood world wide, which is no friend to Jews (Israel) or Christians and the west. And yet, God has also opened many doors for the gospel through these events as well. The absolute turmoil in the Middle East AKA “Arab Spring”, more than any other event this year, will affect the future of world governments, foreign policy, global economics, & freedom of religion as well as man World wide. Quite frankly it already has and is. Thanks for asking :)

Congress narrowly avoiding government shut down happens EVERY year….I don’t think 2011 was a bigger story than other years. I say cut that one.

Also Casey Anthony….though interesting…..I don’t think it’s sermon worthy. (However, I could be wrong)

  13. Arab Spring should definitely be on the list.

I really want to say Bin Laden as #2, but I have a feeling a lot of Japanese would disagree.

  17. i agree with Becky that Mid East unrest has been significant and should be included in the list.

i’d cut the royal wedding & either Anthony or sadly, Congress (although we really do need to be concerned about what’s happening with our gov’t).

  18. Jobs and Camping.

  19. Jobs and Camping

  20. Congress and Camping
